The European chapter of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA-Europe) has issued a statement, jointly with the Spanish Federation of LGBT associations, on the recent election of judges of the European Court of Human Rights. One new judge, Spaniard María Elósegui, has been widely criticised for making homophobic and transphobic statements, such as "homosexuality produces diseases" or arguing that transsexual people should undergo "psychological and psychiatric" therapy. According to ILGA-Europe, judges should have "an open mind, free from bias".
