A proposal has been initiated in the Lithuanian Parliament to hold a referendum on making dual nationality available to more citizens of Lithuania. The Constitutional Court had ruled that, in order to really expand the availability of dual nationality, the Constitution must be amended first; such amendments are only possible through a referendum. Currently, dual nationality is only available to citizens (together with their descendants) who fled Lithuania in the years the country was occupied, but not to people who have left the country following the restoration of independence.
