In August, the Lithuanian Ministry of Justice proposed a new structure for personal identification codes: a sequence of 11 randomly selected numbers. Currently, all Lithuanian personal codes adhere to a rigid internal structure, revealing a person's age, gender and - for foreigners - their place of birth. The excess of personal information in the code makes it difficult to manage data online, while the code's accidental disclosure poses a risk of identity theft. HRMI first mentioned the need to solve the problems related to the formation and use of personal codes back in 2004.
