The Ministry of the Interior of Lithuania submitted amendments to the Law on Electronic Communications that seek to establish compulsory registration for pre-paid SIM cards. The ministry claims that it wants to combat widespread instances of phone fraud. At the end of last year, the Constitutional Court of Romania abolished similar regulations in Romania, declaring that they were unconstitutional and paved the way for massive data protection infringements. The Lithuanian ministry has not yet considered how the compulsory registration of SIM cards will affect the citizens' privacy.
