Why this program
The topic of human rights and civil liberties has never been so important all over the Western world: in some countries freedom of speech is under threat; the arrival of migrants raises questions on their reception, the guarantees for the procedures of their asylum applications and their integration; the raise of the digital age poses the question of the protection of our privacy and digital rights; the human rights of detainees, one of the most vulnerable groups of our societies, are under threat because of prison overcrowding, ill-treatment, and the lack of programs aimed to their resocialisation.
At the same time, these last few years have seen a growing interest in human rights and civil liberties issues: more and more people are willing to engage in activities aimed at the protection and promotion of human rights, non-governmental organisations are looking for more specialized personnel to work on advocacy, policy, and strategic litigation, academics are researching this field in order to sustain the fight for human rights and civil liberties.
However, the field of human rights is full of complexities: debates on the ways to respect, protect and fulfil them are always open and interesting, international human rights bodies try to make states responsible for their human right violations, and NGOs try to bring change in the countries where they operate.
In order to meet the growing request for staff able to face all these challenges, the Italian Coalition for Civil Liberties and Rights has decided to promote, in cooperation with Roma Tre University, the postgraduate Master in Human Rights and Civil Liberties.
How it works
It is a one-year, field-oriented programme with an interdisciplinary approach, and characterized by a combination of theory and practice. Lectures and trainers are high-level academics, practitioners, international organisations officers and NGO activists, who can offer various approaches to this complex field.
Lessons take place in Rome and are held in English in order to offer a real international approach to the subject.
