Bulgaria and Romania should be admitted to the Schengen area as soon as possible, members of the European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee urge. MEPs want EU ministers to swiftly approve the accession of Bulgaria and Romania as full members of the Schengen area and scrap a plan EU ministers have been mulling over that would take effect in two stages: first ending checks at internal sea and air borders; and following this by stopping checks at internal land borders. But MEPs say such a plan would pose a number of security risks and call for a single-step action.
