The EU should increase the resources to promote democracy, rule of law and fundamental rights in the Union, including support to civil society groups working in the field, MEPs of the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties Committee voted on Monday. MEPs listened to the arguments of Liberties and over 80 other human rights groups and backed a budget of 1.834 billion euros for the Rights and Values Programme for 2021-2027, close to three times more than the amount proposed by the European Commission. MEPs specifically mentioned the protection of democracy and the rule of law as the first aim.
