Watch: Will the EU Cut Off Funding for Authoritarians in Europe?

The EU is giving billions of euros to governments that openly disregard basic EU values, in effect helping to fund governments that are working to undermine it.

by LibertiesEU
We at Liberties believe that the EU should stop sending people's money to authoritarian governments that attack fundamental rights and democracy.

Last week the European Commission put a proposal for a new mechanism on the table that would allow it to stop governments receiving EU funds if they interfere with the independence of their judicial systems. This is a victory for Liberties.

In fact, it technically already includes the obligation that governments have independent courts to act as the ultimate check on what’s happening.

All the EU needs to do is spell this requirement out more clearly than it is now. We set our ideas out in quite a bit of detail in this policy paper.
