With no prospect of a safe haven, the German relief organisations Sea-Watch and Sea-Eye continue to wait in the Mediterranean with 49 rescued migrants aboard their ships. Malta and Italy continue to deny entry to their ports. Pope Francis has appealed to European leaders to show solidarity with the people. The 32 people aboard Sea-Watch 3 were rescued on 22 December. Another 17 migrants are waiting for permission to disembark from Professor Albrecht Penck, which is operated by Sea-Eye. On Friday, one migrant jumped into the water and tried to swim to Malta.
