Seimas (Lithuanian Parliament) Ombudsmen reported having received a record number of complaints in 2013. After examination, almost 30% were deemed valid, i.e. human rights violations and/or abuse of office were established. Most complaints dealt with human rights violations in prisons, and most violations occurred at the Central Prison Hospital (Lukiškės Prison). The Seimas Ombudsmen's Office will also be carrying out the national prevention of torture from 2014. It also seeks to become the national human rights institution, establishing a Human Rights Office for that purpose.
