Last Monday, July 10, a court in The Hague decided that an elementary school had to pay €500 compensation because it planned the school picture on Eid. The case was brought by the parents of two schoolchildren unable to join the picture as it was on the same day as the religious festival. The court held that the alternative - to take individual pictures on another day - was sufficient. By not providing proper alternatives for the group picture, the court found that the school had made an indirect distinction and had thereby violated the right to equal treatment.
