The Netherlands has issued its first gender-neutral passport. Leonne Zeegers received a passport with the gender designation X, instead of M for man or V for woman. The 57-year-old was born male, but now identifies as intersex, and had previously undergone surgery in 2001 to become female. Zeegers won the right to the gender-neutral passport after prevailing in a lawsuit, with judges ruling that not allowing gender-neutral passports amounted to a "violation of private life, self-determination and personal autonomy".
