The General Assembly of the Civil Liberties Union for Europe (Liberties) has approved the appointment of Martynas Jockus, Director of Human Rights Monitoring Institute (HRMI), Lithuania, as a new board member with immediate effect.
The Civil Liberties Union for Europe is a Berlin-based civil rights organisation campaigning with member organisations in Brussels and across 20 EU countries. Liberties leads the most extensive, independent report on the rule of law in the EU, recently publishing the 2024 Report, in addition to its annual Media Freedom Report. They are also lead campaigners on digital rights issues, including advocating for enforcement of the Digital Services Act to ensure electoral integrity and investigating how election and data privacy rules are being circumvented through online advertising.
Martynas Jockus is the director of the HRMI, a 20-year-old organisation based in Lithuania with a successful history of landmark strategic litigation cases and human rights-promoting advocacy. He has a political science background with a master's degree in social and political critique. Martynas' work in Lithuania is focused on promoting public participation and facilitating social inclusion. He works with the HRMI team to increase government accountability and ensure national policy and practice uphold international human rights standards.
