As many as 700 migrants are feared dead in a single shipwreck in the Mediterranean this weekend, bringing the estimated death toll to over 1,000 in one week. In response, the European Commission is promising a new strategy on immigration, which will by adopted in mid-May. An important part of the new strategy would be working with origin and transit countries. The Commission said that it "is deeply chagrined by the tragic developments in the Mediterranean. The reality is stark and our actions must therefore be bold."
