As a result of a new Polish law pushed through by the conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS), the Parliament will nominate the members of the KRS, the independent body responsible for the nomination of judges. At the same time, PiS submitted a draft law that would force the entire Supreme Court into retirement and give the country’s justice minister the ability to decide which judges can stay in their current roles. Critics are worried that these new rules will undermine judicial independence, which is a fundamental part of the right to a fair trial.
