The head of the defense commission of the Italian Senate was recently in Egypt to discuss ending the current freeze in diplomatic relations between the two countries following the torture and murder of Italian researcher Giulio Regeni in early 2016. The investigation into his death has been marked by a lack of cooperation from the Egyptian government, and Italy recalled its ambassador in April 2016. With dialogue open again, CILD, Antigone and Amnesty International reiterate that the Regeni case is not forgotten and truth is not negotiable. Cooperation is the only way to improve relations.
