EU countries are running out of time to comply with
relocation quotas on Italy and Greece, the EC migrationcommissioner, Dmitris Avramopoulos, has said. He added that "160,000 asylum seekers were to be taken from
Italy and Greece by September, but that the latest numbers were still 'very
low.'" Meanwhile, EU countries have declined to help Italy by opening their
ports to asylum seekers and migrants. The EU ministers' meeting took place amid
a fresh wave of people coming via Libya to Italy and near-record migrant
fatality rates in the central Mediterranean.
