Romanian magistrate has ever paid for the mistakes he or she made in decisions that led to European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) judgments against the state. That is
because Romania's statute of limitations for judicial errors has shorter periods (2, 5 or 8 years) than those the ECtHR needs to issue judgments - on average, 7 to 8 years (including domestic litigation).
Romania ranks 4th in the number of ECtHR convictions against the state, after Turkey, Italy and Russia. In 2015, the Romania paid 8 million euros of
public money in compensation for Strasbourg verdicts.
