Italy's Mare Nostrum ("Our Sea" in Latin) rescue program, which saved thousands of migrants from the Mediterranean over the past year, officially ended on November 1. It will be replaced by the EU's Triton operation, despite calls from Italian NGOs to continue Mare Nostrum.
"Italy has done its duty," said Italian Minister of the Interior Angelino Alfano, while also noting how much money the country will save by ending Mare Nostrum.
