Former high-profile anti-corruption chief Laura Codruta Kövesi, who is currently the European Parliament’s top pick for EU Public Prosecutor, was indicted by authorities on Thursday on charges of corruption. Kövesi is barred from leaving the country and from speaking to the press. The Romanian government currently holds the EU presidency and has actively lobbied against Kövesi. Despite the ban she told to the media that the indictment is "a measure intended to silence me, to harass all of us in the judicial system who did our job."
