The interim head of Romania’s anti-corruption agency has stepped down. Anca Jurma blamed a “hostile environment” for her resignation, announced on 8 January, just days after Romania assumed the EU Presidency. Jurma had been in her position for less than six months, after the previous head of the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA), Laura Codruța Kövesi, was controversially removed in July. Kövesi oversaw a crackdown on political corruption that angered many in the government, and Jurma singled out critical, government-friendly media coverage as a reason for her departure.
