Romania’s former chief anti-corruption prosecutor and the leading candidate to become the top EU prosecutor finds her bid for the post under threat after being subpoenaed to testify as a suspect in an unspecified case back in Romania. During Laura Codruta Kovesi's five-year tenure as Romania’s top anti-corruption officer, conviction rates for high-level corruption spiked. This impressed the EU, but created enemies back home. Since becoming a candidate for the EU post, many Romanian politicians - some of whom she investigated - have come out against Kovesi and vowed to end her candidacy.
