New migration figures show that Spain has become the primary gateway to Europe. According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), more than 56,000 migrants arrived in Spain by sea in 2018. This trend could continue as the Spanish coastguard saved more than 400 migrants in the first two days of 2019 alone. On the first day of the new year 111 people were rescued, a spokeswoman said, and 290 more people were rescued the next day.
