There were 45 reported cases of suicides in Italian prisons in 2016. From the beginning of January to late September 2017, 44 cases were reported. This data makes clear the inadequacy of the prison system to deal with the discomfort of those who live within it. Most suicides are committed in the institutions with the worst living conditions, in particular the ones with old and decaying structures, with high rates of overcrowding, with few therapeutic activities and with a low presence of volunteers.
