The ongoing smear campaign against the NGOs at sea has fueled generalized suspicion and eroded the fundamental values of humanity and solidarity in Italy. Today, the debate is more heated than ever after some NGOs, including MSF, refused to sign the Italian government's code of conduct for rescue at sea, and one of them (the German NGO Jugend Rettet) became involved in a criminal investigation for aiding illegal immigration. But this continuing attack on solidarity at sea is only a dangerous distraction from the real causes and responsibilities of the so-called "migration crisis."
