The Vatican attempted to paralyze the release in Italy of the gay-themed movie "Weekend" by banning it from cinemas. After the Italian Bishop's Conference Film Evaluation Commission classified it as "not advised, unusable and scabrous," the movie was restricted to only 10 screens. The good news is that apparently the Vatican‘s limiting the film’s Italian release may only be adding to its success there: in fact, the 2011 indie film about a gay romance earned the country’s highest per-screen average on its first weekend.
