Urgent action is needed to stop the horrific human rights violations of people based on their sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression, a United Nations expert said Friday. Vitit Muntarbhorn said his warning was worldwide, noting the killings, rape, mutilation, torture, arbitrary detention, harassment and physical and mental assaults that befall LGBT people in all parts of the world. "More than 70 countries around the world today still criminalize same-sex relations, and in some of them the death penalty may be applied," Muntarbhorn added.
