Darcus Howe, British writer and broadcaster for black rights for over five decades, passed away last weekend at the age of 74. He organized the 1981 Black People's March after the New Cross fire, in which 13 black teenagers died. He became well known through the British Black Panthers, successfully challenging racism in the police during the Mangrove Nine trial at the Old Bailey in the 1970s. He started his journalism career with Race Magazine and later became a presenter for BBC, LWT and Channel 4. He was the man behind the controversial series White Tribe, exploring the idea of Englishness.
