Unfortunately, even today the lack of understanding surrounding intersex people causes and perpetuates stigmatisation and discrimination from birth or discovery of an intersex trait, which may include infanticide, abandonment and the stigmatisation of families. Intersex people are born with variations in sex characteristics (chromosomes, gonads, sex hormones, or genitals) that do not fit the typical definitions for male or female bodies. Helping people understand intersex individuals is important to prevent prejudices and outdated and dangerous medical practices.
