What turned out to be the #MeToo international campaign
against harassment encouraged more than 600 female politicians in Iceland to go public with
allegations of sexual harassment. Iceland, with the population of 332,000, is a
long-time promoter of women’s rights, and it was no surprise that a scandal over
violence against women was partly responsible for triggering general elections there last month. The group of women was originally organised in
a closed Facebook group lead by Reykjavik city councillor Heida Bjorg
Hilmisdottir, but now 136 of these accounts have been made public.
