Employers may ban workers from the "visible wearing of any political, philosophical or religious sign," including headscarves, the European Court of Justice has ruled. The ECJ did specify that such a ban must be passed as internal company policy and apply to all workers to "dress neutrally," and the ban cannot be based on the wishes of customers. The case stems from an incident in Belgium where a GS4 receptionist was fired for wearing a headscarf to work. The national court sent the case to the ECJ for clarification.
