Atletico Diritti: A Soccer Team Devoted to Human Rights

A new Italian soccer club, Atletico Diritti, founded by two NGOs, brings together a diverse group of players to further the cause of human rights.

by Associazione Antigone

Two Italian NGOs, with the support of a university, have founded "Atletico Diritti," a soccer team on which migrants, detainees and students will play together in order to sensitize people on human right issues. The primary financial support of the team will be received through crowdfunding.

"We are not kidding: Atletico Diritti is a real soccer team! If Brazil lost 7-1 in the semi-final of the World Cup, could we ever do worse? Obviously not. We are a soccer team composed by migrants, prisoners and university students. The associations Progetto Diritti and Antigone, together with the support of Roma Tre University, gave birth to Atletico Diritti. For the first time, our team will compete in a third level amateur league. Our official T-shirts are designed by Made in Jail. We need you to believe in us. We need you to come to support us at the Polisportiva Quadraro Cinecittà soccer field. But, most of all, we need money! Registration has a cost, storage has a cost, balls have a cost, bus tickets for away games have a cost, etc. We play against racism, we play in the name of integration and universal rights, we play in the name of sport as an instrument of cohesion and involvement. Give us a hand. Help us to reach our goal!"

This is what we can read on Indiegogo.com, the club's crowdfunding page. "Atletico Diritto" will play in an amateur league beginning in October. Give them a hand! Give human rights a hand!
