The Diversity Media Awards are a set of nine awards, inspired by GLAAD Media Awards, given annually by the Italian association Diversity.
The awards honor entertainers and productions (from TV, radio, web, cinema, advertising, press and news) that promote a more accurate and faithful representation of LGBT issues.
History
Diversity Media Awards were introduced by Diversity, a non-profit organisation founded by Francesca Vecchioni, daughter of singer and songwriter Roberto Vecchioni, to fight prejudice and discrimination related to sexual orientation and gender identity in Italy. The objective of the organistion is to promote the idea that diversity and multiplicity are essential values that help people understand each other and improve community life. Individual rights, social inclusion, and well-being are therefore central topics of the association’s work.
The Diversity Media Awards are based on the annual Diversity Media Report (DMR), a study on the representation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex issues in Italian media. The report is published by Diversity, together with nine leading Italian universities, and the Pavia Observatory. The DMR analyzes film, television, radio, and advertising, and measures the accuracy of TV and print information. The Media Young Award is awarded by high-school students participating in the event.
The awards are traditionally presented during a gala dinner held at the UniCredit Pavilion in Milan. The first edition of the Diversity Media Awards was hosted by Fabio Canino and Syria, and many influential artists, such as Malika Ayane, participated in the ceremony.
The 2017 edition of the Diversity Media Awards, hosted by Fabio Canino and Carolina Di Domenico, aired on Discovery Real Time on 7 June 2017. The musical guests were Ermal Meta, Paola Turci, Syria and Roberto Vecchioni.
