The disastrous war on drugs has unbearable costs. A recent parliamentary report reveals that Italy spends more than 1 billion euros per year only to detain people who committed drug-related crimes (there were 24,273 back in 2013). Over the last decade, prohibition has cost Italy over 10 billion euros in detention expenses alone, with still more money being spent for police enforcement and legal prosecution. This regime can no longer be sustained, and the only plausible way out is the legalization of cannabis — an aim that will be sustained by CILD through an upcoming campaign.
