The Dutch liberal party VVD is afraid that judges will be inclined to impose fixed-term prison sentences instead of life imprisonment in order to guarantee detainees the prospect of finite detention and to give appropriate effect to the ruling in the case of Vinter and others v. the United Kingdom. In this case, the European Court of Human Rights judged that it's "inhuman" to offer detainees no prospect of release. If this is indeed how judges will act, the Liberal Party will propose to increase the prison sentence for manslaughter from 15 to 30 years and for murder from 30 to 40 years.
