An infringement procedure has been brought against Hungary by the European Commission (EC) on account of the school segregation of Roma. The EC criticized the unjustified qualification of large numbers of Roma children as disabled and the existence of segregated church schools. The EC is concerned about several aspects of Hungarian laws and administrative practices responsible for the fact that a disproportionate number of Roma children attend special schools for mentally disabled students or receive segregated education within majority schools. HCLU welcomes the decision from Brussels.
