A European Union citizen who needs help outside of the European Union in emergencies can now more easily appeal to an embassy or consulate of another EU country if their own country is not represented there. This follows from an EU directive that entered into force on 1 May 2018. The directive does not regulate which aid is provided to citizens of another EU country and under what conditions. That remains a matter for the EU countries themselves.
