European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said on Wednesday in his annual state of the union speech that the European Union plans to add 10,000 additional border guards by 2020 to tackle unlawful migration. This would be a significant increase, as Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, currently has 1,600 employees across Europe. In addition, Juncker told the European Parliament about plans to increase support to the EU28 for processing asylum seekers. He also proposed a new Africa-Europe alliance based on co-operation rather than charity.
