The founder and leader of the German anti-Islam movement Pegida, Lutz Bachmann, must pay a fine of 9,600 euros for inciting racial hatred, but will avoid prison. Both his lawyers and the prosecutors, who sought a seven-month jail sentence, have said they will appeal the ruling. Pegida, which originated in the city of Dresden, organizes regular demonstrations across Germany against Islam and asylum seekers. Bachmann was accused of inciting racial hatred in Facebook posts, in which he called refugees "cattle," "scumbags" and "filth."
