The German Bundestag has passed a new law allowing for telecommunications data retention. The law also introduces a new statutory offense for receiving and handling stolen data, which may be used to criminalize investigative journalism. The legislative proposal was strongly criticized since it violates fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in the German Constitution and the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. The civil rights and data protection organization Digitalcourage calls for support for a constitutional complaint against the law.
