Many hundreds of children in the Netherlands go to school in the morning famished, unwashed and with torn clothing. This emerges from an inquiry of RTL Nieuws. It happens everywhere in the country, at village schools as well as at schools in deprived neighborhoods of large and small cities. Poverty and parents with mental problems are the main causes of this situation. Many schools report the most extreme cases anonymously out of fear of conflict with the parents or damage to their good reputation. Fifty-five schools say they secretly give food, drink and clothing to children in need.
