Antigone, the Italian NGO that runs a national observatory on prison conditions, has presented the results of the first six months of monitoring work for 2015. Prisoner numbers are decreasing and the problem of overcrowding is not as significant as it was when Italy was sentenced for Article 3 violations of the Convention on Human Rights. But prison conditions still need to be improved. Too many prisoners spend their time in forced idleness, without access to work, education or rehabilitation activities.
