The Maltese Parliament adopted the Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sex Characteristics Act on April 1. The bill introduces a transparent gender recognition procedure based on self-determination, recognizing the right of each person to their gender identity. It also allows parents or guardians to decide to postpone the inclusion of a gender marker on the birth certificate until their child’s gender identity is determined. "The Gender Identity, Gender Expression and Sex Characteristics Act sets a new benchmark for Europe," says Transgender Europe Co-Chair Alecs Recher.
