The European Commission should play a bigger role in opposing governments' attempts to limit media freedom and pluralism, according to a resolution passed by the European Parliament with overwhelming majority. The parliamentarians scheduled the vote for the World Press Freedom Day after the recent Maltese and Slovakian journalist killings and the generally worsening media freedom situation in the European Union. The resolution introduced by Italian MEP Barbara Spinelli highlights that more than half of the European abuse cases against media workers are committed by government officials.
