A monument to Georgi Markov was recently unveiled in Sofia’s Journalist Square. Markov was a Bulgarian dissident, author and journalist murdered in London in 1978 in an act widely suspected to be the work of communist secret services. He was a novelist and playwright who defected to the West in 1969 and worked for Radio Free Europe, Deutsche Welle and the BBC World Service.
The monument was unveiled to mark the 80th anniversary of Markov's birth, as well the 25th anniversary of the end of communism in the country, celebrated through the 25 Years Free Bulgaria campaign.
