Morocco has rejected EU plans to build offshore centres to process asylum applications in North Africa ahead of letting migrants into the European Union. Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan Foreign Minister, said the approach EU leaders are pushing would make it “too easy to claim this is a Moroccan responsibility” meaning that even Europe’s offers of financial assistance would not change the country’s position. The EU approached Egypt with a similar proposal in September, with the aim of helping to curb migration from the region in exchange for financial support.
