According to government figures obtained by the Labour Party, the number of legal aid providers in England and Wales has been cut by 20% in just five years, depriving hundreds of thousands of people of much-needed legal support. The statistics show a dramatic decline in legal providers across all regions of the country, with Wales having the largest drop, at 29 per cent. Labour leaders have been quick to point out that the government had failed to further discuss a promised review of legal aid after having committed in February to set out details of the work within a few months.
