The rule-of-law conflict between Poland and the European institutions reached new heights on Monday after Polish Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Gowin said his government will ignore the ruling of the EU's top court, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), on the retirement of judges. The CJEU is currently checking if recently adopted legislation on the retirement age of Supreme Court judges breaks EU rules. If the court suspends the law, "our government will probably have no choice but to ignore the ruling of the CJEU as contrary to the Treaty of Lisbon," Gowin said.
