Two men from Zaandam and Leeuwarden were sentenced in January by the Overijssel Court to 30 and 18 months in prison for smuggling Syrian refugees. With rented vans they drove from Italy, through France, and into the Netherlands. The refugees were dropped nearby the Ter Apel asylum reception center. The refugees paid considerable amounts for their trip to the Netherlands. It was for their own profit that the traffickers took advantage of the refugees' vulnerable position and contributed to maintaining an illegal circuit.
