State Secretary for Security and Justice Klaas Dijkhoff wants a tougher approach to criminal refugees. Asylum seekers breaking the law will lose their residence permit sooner. Currently, a convicted asylum seeker loses his residence permit if he gets a prison sentence of 18 months or more. This will be reduced to six months. This doesn't apply to recognized refugees on the basis of the Refugee Convention, and the possible consequences of expulsion will be considered. The limit for losing the permit for this group will change from 24 to 10 months.
